VISION STATEMENT

We are women of vision, unified across our diversity, and committed in partnership to the celebration, evolution of, promotion, respect for and enforcement of our human rights. We are all working, as CAWA Assembly keynote speaker Bella Abzug so aptly phrased it "...for a just and humane order in which all people can live together in harmony."

RECOMMENDATIONS

• Promote and protect the human rights of women and girls through the ratification and full implementation of international human rights treaties, including The Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination against Women (CEDAW), and the Convention on the Rights of the Child.
• We support passage by the US House of Representatives of House Resolution 96 (HR 96) introduced by Rep. Lynn Woolsey (D-CA) and co-sponsored by 16 members of the California delegation to the House of Representatives, among others, which expresses the "sense of the House that the Senate should give it 'advice and consent' to CEDAW ratification".
• We call for the local endorsement and ratification of these treaties, by local entities such as City Councils, Boards of Supervisors, and the State Assembly throughout California.
• Continue public education and support court cases which point out the violation of the human rights of all, including women and girl children, of the so-called "California Civil Rights Initiative" (Prop 209), and the "Illegal Aliens Ineligibility for Public Services Verification and Reporting Initiative Statute " (Prop. 187).
• Promote the enforcement on all government levels of the provisions of those treaties which have already been ratified by the US Government, such as the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights, the International Convention on the Elimination of All forms of Racial Discrimination, and The Torture Convention. These treaties have provisions for rights which would improve the status of all - including women and girl children.
• Enact and implement legislation and public education to help eliminate violence against women, which is a human rights violation.
• Promote legal literacy and human rights education, especially among women and girl children, in schools of all levels and adult education programs.
• Provide gender-sensitive human rights education and training for public officials and within groups such as the police and other law enforcement personnel, the judiciary, legal and health professionals.
